The people with high “personal” ambition that ruin this world for the rest of us. I am sure at least one of them was sitting at the table on that first thanksgiving thinking about how to exploit the Native Americans.

While it is incredibly difficult to keep the breast meat properly hydrated (even I find the best turkeys seem dry with their white meat), another commenter is absolutely correct - a properly done turkey will have absolutely succulent and tasty brown meat. To the point where adding any garnish or gravy is almost an insult.

That reality is so incredibly fucked up on a fundamental, physical level.

You’re telling me that if I do nothing, my room will get messy, my house will decay, my machines will break down. But somehow matter magically organizes itself into life?

    Fuck all the way off.

But somehow matter magically organizes itself into life?

There is a recent, decently-supported hypothesis that the emergence of life is a byproduct of entropy, and the need for a system as a whole to almost “self-process” itself from a state of high order to one of lower order. So life is an emergent “engine” that allows entropy to function more efficiently. Or, at least a more efficient path than non-life.

Downside is that life - as we understand it - is only possible under a narrow range of environmental conditions, and complex life even more so. So while “life” may exist throughout the universe in measured single-celled doses, complex life - especially sapient life - may be distressingly rare or even wholly absent except for us.

Which is a real kick in the nuts when you examine the scientific evidence of how fast we are hurtling towards our own extinction.

Entropy is some god damned bullshit.

I had no idea how bad entropy was until I was an adult. I can’t be happy just relaxing because of the knowledge that everything around me is fucking falling apart and I have to spend every waking hour fighting the entropy around me. You can’t just live in a house or condo or apartment, it’s constantly crumbling.

Every single person now thinks they’re smarter than everyone else. No matter what their political leanings are, they’re all smarter than everyone else. Smarter than:

    • Doctors
    • Scientists
    • Engineers
    • Economists

It’s absolutely ridiculous and it started sometime around the 90s around when Ross Perot first ran for president and it just got worse with social media.

That’s the real problem right now. Everyone thinks they know more than people who spent decades studying and becoming experts in their field.

To be fair a lot of people with PHDs are dumb as shit. Maybe not in their field, but in every single other aspect of life. That’s part of why arguments from authority should be avoided–the authority may be expert of their field, but their area of focus is likely extremely narrow.

Absolutely. That’s still kinda the point.

        You 100% should not trust:

        • An epidemiologist’s opinion on inflation
        • A civil engineer’s opinion on viral spread
        • An economist’s opinion on traffic flow

They’re just as guilty of this bullshit as everyone else.

I agree with your overall premise, but this is a bad example since capitalism is a disease

I hate that most people’s ideas of success is to earn lots of money and buy expensive things, rather than help the community.

i mean, have you tried either?

helping your community is a task of endless need and criticism that opens you up to personal liability and attack. like i have been verbally assaulted and threatened by people for helping my community. i’ve never encounter that at my place of employment.

earning lots of money and buying shit is way more fun and easy. when i stay at a hotel the hotel staff don’t threaten to beat the shit out of me.

    Exceptionalism.

The kind that says “I’m special, but you aren’t”

The kind that lets billionaires exist and fuck with national politics and laws. The kind that lets rich people or corporations off of crimes with little or no punishment. The kind that lets a religious person use their religion to be shitty in any way, as a shield or a cudgel. The kind that lets someone festoon their pickup with LED lights and a squat so you’re blinded at night when they’re coming at you or tailgating you.

All of them think they’re special and the rules don’t apply, they don’t care how it affects those around them - or others are to be exploited.

Selfishness. It’s the root cause of many things that plague the world: people putting themselves/their immediate circle before others, lack of empathy, greed, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny, racism, fascism, or pricks listening to stuff through their phone’s speaker in public.

So what? Most of us were never meant to be impactful, or even lack the ability to be impactful. I would posit that life in general was only ever meant for us to vibe with the universe for a brief time. In the span of epochs, and especially once humanity makes itself extinct, vanishingly little will have any material impact on even the planet, much less reality as a whole.

Unless you manage to trigger false vacuum decay. Then you have made the biggest possible impact by destroying the entire universe. Not sure this is an appropriate goal to reach for, but hey. You do you.
