I’ve been using Apple products since 2007. I’ve stuck with the platform through a lot—hardware changes, locked-down software, design regressions, and tools that feel like they were made deliberately harder to use. Lately, that frustration has boiled over, especially with things like the Shortcuts app, where basic actions are buried behind hidden menus and UI behavior seems to change based on factors you can’t even see. Autocorrect is turned on in automation fields. Logic paths vanish if you tap out of order. It’s absurd.
But this isn’t just a complaint about one app. It feels like Apple has shifted from enabling users to controlling them, even when you’re trying to stay fully within the system. What used to be intuitive is now opaque. And despite that, many of us still use Apple products because they’re often better than the alternatives. We’re just tired of pretending everything is fine.
So I’m wondering: is there any interest in a Lemmy community for Apple users who want to talk openly about what’s broken, what could be improved, and how to make things work better? I don’t care whether you’ve been using Macs since the Classic or just got your first iPhone. If you’re frustrated, curious, skeptical, or hopeful, you’re welcome. The goal is a space for real discussion, including ideas, suggestions, and brainstorming. Not for constant complaining, (although it is getting more and more difficult), but something more thoughtful, even if occasionally a little cathartic. Also welcome are any positive discoveries or revelations that the group would appreciate.
If that sounds like something you’d want to be part of, let me know. I’ll start the community if there’s interest. (Also, should I cross-post this somewhere?)
Yesss I’m all for this. I’m a reluctant iPhone and Apple TV user. I hate my iPhone, but I hate it slightly less than all the various androids I’ve had over the years. I’d love a place to vent.
Apple users who are fed up with Apple and who want to move to Linux so bad +1
for Apple users who are fed up with Apple?
Aren’t this simply the existing Android communities?
I would suggest creating a community called “Let’s Talk About Apple”.
Too many tech communities on Lemmy are drowning in links to tech news and blogs. I wish it would be more like forums with people actually having discussions.
Links to tech news complaining about the tech. It’s a sludge.
That’s what I’m after. It didn’t even occur to me to have posts to outside content.
Healthy criticism is healthy. Do it.
I dont think you truly love something you cannot have reasonable criticisms of that are seperate from your involvement or overall tolerance for it
Obviously that should inform the extent to which you expose yourself to potential harm but you can find ways to synergize your interests to the effect that they will have a stake in doing right by you as well as themself, although that often involves being a squeaky wheel and vocal
Well said. I am also definitely open to name suggestions that are in line with the healthy criticism approach.
appleptic (apoplectic), iscream, coretheapple, thatsfruity, applewhy…
crapple probably too far in the moaning direction, despite being a classic.
Either way, watching this space :)
Nice :)
I subbed to salty caramel apple. Love the retro vibe.
I stay several generations behind on purpose now. For one thing, shit costs too much. My Mac is a 2020 Air I got from a friend when his dad died for $300. I can’t see myself getting rid of that anytime soon, as it replaced a 2012 model that is still going strong (and is the computer I take into the field for work).
I cannot stand the size of Apple’s phones, I had an 8 and then an SE and I tried then to move to a 12 and I absolutely hated everything about it, size, weight - the bullshit camera switching between lenses and turning my zoomed-in photos into bizarre cartoons.
I also far prefer the button, as I have to take hundreds of pictures a day for work and FaceID fails, either by not waking the phone up when I pull it from the holster or by just outright not recognizing me in the sweat and sunglasses, making me have to manually open it, shake it, enter the code, swearing the whole time.
I’m now on an SE2 and when I have to get rid of it I’ll go to SE3, but I don’t know what comes after that. Androids aren’t any better.
My favorite form factor was my 7 plus. Do you have cloud and/or sync issues with anything due to not being on the latest OSs?
No, but I don’t use cloud at all, I have a system for doing manual local backups for all my machines. I also have two Windows machines for gaming (that I will be switching to Linux in October) and a Linux media server.
I have been using Apple product since 1979. It’s going to take a lot more to disuade me.
Dissuade you from what?
Give up on Apple products
I would definitely love a fuckapple or deapple community or magazine.
Yes
