Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•You die and get reincarnated as alien species (keeping all your memories), and you found out that your species is planning to destroy Earth, what do you do?
21·2 days agoI’ll take a slightly different angle.
Assuming that my new homeworld is inherently aggressive and conquest-oriented, a make the case to spare Earth for the time being. Instead, begin a program of infiltrating and integrating into human societies with the goal of influencing technical and social advancement to make them as aggressive and warlike as us. It would not be difficult to do given humanity’s natural proclivities. When the time is right, introduce ourselves, form an alliance, and use them as front-line cannon fodder for future conquests.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How would you interpret this Halloween party theme?
3·2 days agoI would dress up as a piece of paper on which is written the official Webster definition of “less.”
Or just go naked. Either works.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your favorite Halloween costume that you went as?
4·8 days agoWhen I was in college I decided to go drag for Halloween. I got the gayest dude in our dorm to pick my outfit, wig, do my makeup, and make sure everything was perfect. Then a bunch of us went bar hopping and it was easily one of the best nights of my college life.

I joined the army because I had no idea what to do with my life.
35 years later I still have no idea what to do with my life.
Yeah my housing unit had a little laundry room with four washers and dryers and a folding area. All the laundry guy did was offer the convenience of doing your stuff for you and giving it back to you nice and clean and folded, you know, for people who couldn’t be bothered to do that for themselves.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Your entire life gets turned into a movie / short series by the best filmmaker in the world with unlimited budget, do you like your movie? How do you think people would rate it?
3·12 days agoMan, they’re gonna have a hell of a time trying to turn me into a likable, sympathetic protagonist, but sure, give it a shot.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was incarceration like for you?
21·13 days agoI was in a low security federal prison for a couple years. There was actually a surprising amount of work and leisure activities to keep inmates occupied if they chose. There were maintenance jobs, including electrical and HVAC jobs that you could actually get certification for. There was a full library, education facility, computer lab, chapel, rec center with indoor and outdoor courts, and fully equipped music and art studios.
I worked in the education center, helping other inmates work towards their GED. Inmates who didn’t have a high school education were offered extra good time if they got their GED, and it was rewarding to be a part of. In the evening I usually went to rec and played in bands with other inmates who played.
The housing unit was usually quiet. We were all short timers who just wanted to get their time done and go home. We didn’t have cells. We were in little cubicles just big enough for a bunk, lockers, and a desk, and we generally had free roam around the place. Folks would get together and play board games in the evening. And of course there were your usual hustles…the store guys, guys who’d do your laundry, whatever.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's something you do when no one's looking or is around?
28·16 days agoFart in comically obnoxious ways. Examples include the Doggy Leg Lift, the Goatse, the Modified Goatse, and one I simply call “The Hamburgler’s Revenge.”
I like this place because it’s a work in progress and because of all its perceived imperfections.
I’m an old GenXer who remembers AOL chat rooms and Usenet. Each featured a small cluster of folks you’d talk with each day and thought of as friends. Reddit offered that kind of connection once, but now it’s become a monolith that believes its own hype. Not to mention the infestation of bots and trolls that no one cares enough to do anything about because engagement is engagement.
I’m new here so I’m still learning my way around but I like this way better. I have more control over what and who I see, the memes are fresher, and the communities feel more human.
