I have exactly this problem. It’s also very difficult when watching a movie adaptation of a book I’ve read, to associate the character from the book with the actor in the movie. When I read, they’re just a name.

A hate crime is specifically crime that was motivated by hate for that group. Getting into a fight about something unrelated to that isn’t a hate crime, whether or not you knew they were a member of that group ahead of time.
