Stop spreading this lie. Linux has a more graceful shutdown process than Windows ever did. It doesn’t abruptly kill everything.

You mean to tell me you don’t have a CNC machine at home? Even the most barebones of homes must have arc welding gear stashed somewhere, right?
Now you’ve ended up in the Lego builds part of YouTube.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What did you stupidly believe as a child?
19·10 days agoI thought girls had ballsacks without the shaft.
Eric Cartman, is that you? There was an episode where he tried to kick a girl in the balls. It did not work.
One thing I think other’s haven’t mentioned yet: US internal politics specifically make headlines worldwide, certainly in the western world. That’s not true of German, Swedish, Israeli, or any other country’s internal politics. This is probably because USA is arguably the only real remaining superpower, or something close to it. Regardless of the reason, US politics are uniquely loud and everpresent, which I guess is why they were singled out.
Edit: I once saw a subreddit’s mod post explaining this better than I did, but I can’t find it at the moment.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are there examples of vertical integration that aren't harmful to the consumer?
24·15 days agoNot disagreeing with the benefits, but my gripe with Apple is that they lock out everyone else from even competing with them, which is anticompetitive and ultimately anti-consumer. All of those cool features only with with THEIR phone, THEIR laptop, THEIR smart speaker, THEIR earphones, THEIR smartwatch, THEIR cloud storage, THEIR keyboard, THEIR mouse, THEIR location-tracking tag, THEIR VR headset, THEIR TV box… If you replace any one of those things with a competitor’s product – which might have been better than Apple’s – then you’re locked out of many great features for no good reason.
It’s a good idea, but it’s not backwards-compatible with the system already in use.
What letter do you use for 789431?
Two possible solutions to this:
- Always use a single digit for the base. Examples: binary is base 2, decimal is base A (because A=10 in bases higher than decimal), hexadecimal is base G.
- Use the highest digit plus one. Examples: binary is base 1+1, decimal is base 9+1, hexadecimal is base F+1.
… or we just continue to agree that bases are always written in
base 10decimal unless specified otherwise. By the way, how does the alien speak English?
I think you misread a word there

FM radio.
To be honest, I mostly don’t listen to music. I do have a subscription to Spotify but I don’t really use it. I’m not cancelling it because I’m on a Duo plan with my dad and he uses it a lot, really getting his money’s worth.
So the only time I do listen to music is while driving, and then I just turn on the radio. (I also don’t drive very often, I mostly use public transport.)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•"Flushable wipes"; "dishwasher-safe"; "odourless" - What are some other blatant lies that companies get away with?
42·29 days agoThat’s hardly relevant. All I’m saying is that this label is not a “blatant lie” like this thread calls for, it means something and it’s regulated.

72·30 days agoIIRC there is a legally defined set of criteria to call foodstuffs organic. It does mean something, but if has nothing to do with chemistry’s definition of organic.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•what happens when you cut something?
83·1 month agoI’m pretty sure that generally some particles break off from either side whenever you cut something in half. When I cut paper with scissors I get a distinct smell, that’s clearly paper particles that have escaped into the air. Under the right conditions you may even see some dust.
When using a saw it is very explicitly removing material to create a gap between the two sides. You can see this clearly in a lot of woodworking videos on YouTube. For other tools like a knife, it’s not as obvious, but I still think some material will inevitably be lost no matter what you do.
Maybe some extremely specialized nano-scale methods can cut things without losing material, but I doubt that’s something you can do on an everyday life scale.
Disclaimer: I’m not an expert and I did 0 research, just giving my opinion and personal knowledge (which may be wrong).
(Random thoughts, I’m clueless about this subject, it’s safer to assume I’m wrong about everything)
USA is an obvious first choice for many. I imagine other developed countries in the Americas will be hotspots too. The big question is which countries would accept mass influxes of European refugees.
I wonder if enough could flee to Africa, and bring some substantial wealth with them… Would that actually help Africa catch up to the developed world? Or would it instead just be new colonialism?
Of course Africa is huge, diverse and messy, so that’s a very vague answer/question.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When, if ever, was the last physical altercation you've had/been in?
2·1 month agoUp to you if this counts because no one was hurt. I regularly go to therapy and it’s in a hospital. At the entrance there is a guard station and they ask anyone who enters where they’re going and whatnot. I find this pretty stressful, as I don’t like sharing private information like that. Sometimes I give answers that are a little evasive, like “treatment”.
One time apparently he was a bit suspicious of me so he told me to told me to step aside as he let other people in. I was already late so this really stressed me out, there were like 6 people behind me and it felt like an eternity. It felt like such bullshit. So when I saw an opportunity I just tried to sprint through.
But dang, that guy knows how to do his job. He caught me and physically held be back like I was nothing. (And honestly I kind of am nothing, I don’t exercise or anything). I might as well have tried to run through a wall. That was that, no hitting or anything. Eventually another guard came and cleared me to go inside.
As I said, I wasn’t hurt and I don’t think he was either, but it still was a physical altercation IMO. For what is worth, I was never angry at him as an individual, he was doing his job… It’s the policy that I’m angry about. It’s a freaking hospital, about half the reasons you go there are reasons you don’t want to say aloud. It’s a dumb policy.

I don’t know the technical details, all I know is that if I click Shut Down while I have unsaved work open, it tells me about it and doesn’t just kill everything.
